Secretary wins Major Accolade

Alexis Coward _Awards

Alexis Coward, a Practice Manager working with Consultant Cardiologist Dr Oliver Segal at The Harley Street Clinic has received a trophy at the BSMSA (British Society of Medical Secretaries & Administrators) Annual Awards ceremony as Runner Up (Highly Commended), in the Private Medical Secretary of the Year 2015-16 category.

Alexis had impressed the judges as she had recently compiled a new system for managing patients with implanted devices who require regular follow-up – many of them using remote transmissions with wireless 3G monitors from home. The system was backed up by an innovative spreadsheet enabling the patient’s pathway to be monitored appropriately. This is so important as many of these devices are implanted for serious life-threatening arrhythmias. The judges were also impressed by Alexis’s diligence, commitment and initiative to the Practice.

Speaking at the Award Ceremony Lunch at The Holiday Inn, Milton Keynes, Alexis said “I am really proud to have achieved this honour, so much of what I do I would just consider as part of my job. For my work on the new patient management system to be recognised in this way though is a real boost which will make the Practice much more efficient.”

Kathy Perkins from the BSMSA says “ A Practice Manager working in Private Practice is akin to running a business with all the ramifications that entails – they have to know , in addition to excellent management skills, financial accounting, liaising between private health insurers and patients, a detailed knowledge of their speciality and the ramifications if surgery or special investigations are also involved. They are probably also involved in Marketing and also HR Management. It certainly is a broad range of competencies.”
