On the 5th October the Paediatric Food and Drug Challenge Service at The Harley Street Clinic celebrated its 100th patient. Our Paediatric Allergy Clinical Nurse Specialist, Rebecca Batt has worked tirelessly to develop this service alongside the other members of the Paediatric Outpatient nursing team as well as two highly regarded Paediatric Allergy Consultants – Dr Helen Cox and Dr Robert Boyle.

Tom our three year old, who was our 100th allergy patient responded very enthusiastically to his new gift – Thomas the Tank Engine toy, to commemorate the occasion and him.

Food allergy affects 6-8% of children in the UK . It is a life threatening condition if not managed appropriately. Being able to offer this service enables families and their children to live a healthier and safer life, understanding what foods and medication the child can and cannot consume. As one mother said “as a mother I am constantly worried about what hidden ingredients may be in food that may affect my son. Being able to access this service enables me to be clearer on what his diet should/should not contain”. Food and Drug challenges are the gold standard in allergy diagnosis but they must be performed in a safe environment by experienced staff trained in allergy and anaphylaxis. Oral Challenges are a vital part of the allergy service provided by The Harley Street Clinic.

Whilst the service continues to grow as the demand increases, we would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Rebecca and the nursing team at the Paediatric Outpatient department for providing continued high quality, evidenced based care.
