Welcome to the HCA UK Neurosciences Department

The brain is the command centre for our nervous system. It's the most complex organ in our body, consisting of billions of neurons that send messages and make connections with the other parts of our body during every moment of our lives. From creativity to the language we speak, there is barely a feature of human behaviour that we can't attribute to how our brain functions. In many ways it defines who we are. We understand how a brain injury or condition not only affects you, but also those closest to you.

Here at HCA UK we have a global reputation for successfully managing and treating the most challenging neurological conditions. With the best minds, theatres and intensive care units, along with specialist nursing teams, we are able to provide acute care for all our patients. We treat adults across our London hospitals at The Harley Street Clinic, The Wellington Hospital and London Bridge Hospital, and children at The Portland Hospital and The Harley Street Clinic.

Renowned neurologists and neurosurgeons

At HCA UK, it’s imbedded in our culture to ensure patient safety always comes first. We are proud to work with many of the most established and respected consultant neurosurgeons and neurologists in the country, delivering expert care to our patients across every aspect of neurological care. They are leaders in the fields of neurosurgery, neurology, neurophysiology, neuroradiology, oncology, spinal surgery, maxillofacial and skull-base surgery.

The care our consultants provide can transform patients' lives, offering them hope and better outcomes. Many of our consultants practising with us trained at leading NHS teaching hospitals, and sit on governing bodies including The Royal College of Surgeons, Specialist Advisory Committee for Neurosurgery and the Court of Examiners.

Expert opinions from multidisciplinary teams

At HCA UK we were one of the first hospital groups to establish multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) within the private healthcare sector. Whatever your condition, we combine areas of expertise from specialists as wide-ranging as oncologists, neurologists, radiologists, neurosurgeons, physiotherapists and more, enabling us to provide a more holistic approach to the high level of care we deliver to each patient.

Our neurosciences department hold a brain and spinal tumour MDT meeting every two weeks, sharing a broad range of expert opinions that can also be brought together on the same day if emergency treatment is required.

Groundbreaking treatments

Our renowned neurologists and neurosurgeons push medical boundaries here every day. From treating brain tumours with immunology to stem cell treatment for multiple sclerosis and fibre-mapping the brain, they constantly strive for clinical excellence and new breakthroughs.

At The Wellington Hospital, The Harley Street Clinic and London Bridge Hospital, our consultants share knowledge, research and clinical data, coming together on complex medical cases to offer our patients the best possible neurological treatment, brain surgery, spinal surgery and rehabilitation

State-of-the-art intraoperative MRI for neurosurgery

As part of HCA Healthcare UK’s continued investment in the latest medical technology, The Wellington Hospital’s Neurosurgery Centre is now equipped with an intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (iMRI) scanner and fully integrated digital theatre.

The iMRI scanner allows surgeons to carry out an intraoperative MRI scan of their patient’s brain during their surgery. This gives the surgeon confidence that they have achieved their treatment goal. It also provides our patients with the best possible chance of tumours being removed fully without the need for further surgery.

The latest technology

Our multidisciplinary teams have access to the most advanced medical equipment in our theatres. This includes ultrasonic surgical aspirators, the ROSA© robot, neuronavigation and, from early 2019, the ZEISS KINOVO microscope and intraoperative MRI. Our non-invasive technology now includes the Icon Gamma Knife, CyberKnife® and Visualase® system.

Operated with accuracy, precision and outstanding clinical judgement by our world-class consultants, each treatment can offer better outcomes for our patients.

A glimpse into the future of patient care

We are committed to end-to-end, personalised care for our patients using cutting-edge neurosurgical interventions. Professor Keyoumars Ashkan, consultant neurosurgeon at HCA Healthcare UK, discusses innovations in neuroscience for cancer and tumour treatment in this blog, including trials for a ground-breaking vaccine and his expertise in Visualase™, a minimally invasive keyhole procedure. He says “The more we understand, the more personalised and targeted treatments we can produce. Even if I wasn’t a neurosurgeon, I would still be working in the field of neuroscience – the brain is the most fascinating entity on the planet.”

Going above and beyond

We fully understand the gravity and challenges of living with a neurological injury or condition. From the moment you arrive in our hospitals, we take care of you like you're a member of our family, making your HCA UK experience as positive as possible for you and your family.

Similar to our consultants, our clinical nurses sub-specialise, meaning they can provide deep clinical knowledge as well as expert care. They’ll make sure our team understands your life beyond your medical notes, ensuring we offer you the options that are best suited to you. They’ll help you prepare for surgery, explain complex clinical information, manage your treatment, and look after you and your loved ones.

Looking beyond your surgery

Rehabilitation is an integral part of your recovery. The Rehabilitation Centre at The Wellington Hospital is home to the only CARF-accredited, hospital-based rehabilitation centre in London and the largest private unit of its kind in the UK.

Our multidisciplinary team of consultants, who are sub-specialists in the range of neurological conditions, together with our specialist nurses, neurophysiotherapists, neuropsychologists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, create a rehabilitation programme designed around your personal goals.

Paediatric neurology: Caring for children with congenital or acquired neurological conditions

We care for babies with complex neurological conditions. We offer treatment for children with hydrocephalus, spina bifida, brain tumours, brain haemorrhages, and brain injuries and congenital brain conditions, through to acute neurological rehabilitation for children at The Portland Hospital.

Our locations specialising in neurosciences at HCA UK

Each of our hospitals is a centre of excellence in its own right. Specialist neurology and neurological procedures are performed in each hospital, from the latest minimally invasive imaging to life-changing brain and spinal surgery.
