Multi-Disciplinary Teams

What are MDTs?

At The Harley Street Clinic, we pride ourselves on our multidisciplinary approach to patient centred care. Our Multidisciplinary Teams (MDTs), unique in the private sector, meet regularly to discuss complex cases and to ensure that patients are receiving the correct advice and care with regards to their treatment.

Why are MDTs important

MDTs bring together groups of medical experts and clinicians to carefully review patient treatment plans. Typically these groups consist of; specialist consultants, clinical experts, surgeons, physicians, radiologists, nurses, allied health professionals and medical experts involved in the care of each individual case.

This allows for a 360 degree, holistic approach to reviewing individual patient care and treatment plans, making sure that each patient has the correct plan and is being given the best treatment possible.

At The Harley Street Clinic we have MDTs reviewing the following care paths:

Breast
Cardiology
Cyberknife
Endometriosis
Gamma Knife
Gastrointestinal
Gynae-Oncology
Haematology
Head, neck and thyroid
Neurology
Paediatric Oncology
Respiratory conditions
Skin
Urology

What can you expect from an MDT?

No matter the case being reviewed, each MDT aims to have the following outcomes:

  • Continuity of care. Each patient will have different teams of clinicians, nurses and health professionals all looking after their care plans. MDTs aim to consolidate all aspects of this care, ensuring that each patient has a continuity of care and that all those involved are kept updated and are aware any changes to care plans
  • Adherence to in-house and national guidelines in all aspects of care
  • The sharing of expertise, advice and best practice, allowing patients and clinicians to benefit from a communal knowledge pool from experts at the forefront of their specialty. Sometimes this knowledge sharing could result in new procedures and techniques being formed and implemented

All of these outcomes give referring doctors and patients seeking a second opinion, the confidence that each MDT will provide them with correct advice, and the reassurance that they are receiving the best possible care.
