The Harley Street Clinic wins prestigious LaingBuisson Award

LaingBuisson-201-(ZF-0617-74341-1-001)

The Harley Street Clinic has scooped the “Innovation in Care” trophy at the LaingBuisson 2015 Awards at The London Lancaster Hotel.
In competition with 6 other independent hospitals in this category, The Harley Street Clinic’s Radiotherapy research team headed by Lynsey Rice triumphed on the night. The award related to the work done by the team in relation to a clinical trial which is investigating the effectiveness of hair sparing radiotherapy treatment to the whole brain.
The trial – initiated following a request from Consultant Clinical Oncologist, Dr David Landau – is still continuing and being refined but is aimed at patients who have metastatic (secondary) brain tumours. It is investigating the use of a scalp sparing technique of radiotherapy treatment to the whole brain. Current methods of treatment result in complete alopecia as a side effect. Hair loss is usually patchy and uneven and re-growth similar and slow. It is hoped that by reducing the radiation dose to the hair bearing follicle on the scalp it will reduce hair loss and increase the speed and evenness of re-growth.
Suitable candidates are still being sought for the trial but it is stressed that it is only applicable to patients requiring whole brain radiotherapy for secondary brain tumours or prophylactic brain irradiation associated with lung cancer. If further information is required Lynsey Rice should be contacted via lynsey.rice@hcahealthcare.co.uk .
Speaking at the Ceremony, Aida Yousefi, Chief Executive Officer of The Harley Street Clinic paid tribute to the team, “This award is great news for The Harley Street Clinic. Lynsey Rice, our Research and Development Radiotherapist , Stephanie Houghton, Senior Dosimetrist and the radiotherapy and medical physics teams have worked together tirelessly to bring this project to fruition. I really hope that the trial is a success and that the great work that our team has done can be more widely appreciated by affected patients in the future.”
