Description of the service/speciality at the hospital that the CNS supports

Gamma Knife Radiosurgery is a highly targeted form of radiotherapy delivered as a day case treatment. It is used for benign and malignant brain tumours and Arterial- Vascular Malformations.  The service is a partnership with Bart’s health trust and based at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, the partnership has been running since 2002 and treats both private and NHS patients.  The department has a Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) composed of Neurosurgeons, Neuroradiologists, Oncologists, Physicists, Radiotherapists, Nurses and administrative support. MDT meetings are held twice a month, with emergency cases discussed separately as required.

The unit philosophy is to provide high quality care in a relaxed environment making the treatment as easy as possible for patients and relatives.  The service consistently achieves high levels of patient satisfaction in HCA audits and is routinely reviewed in order to develop the service further.  For local patients follow up arrangements are in place with Bart’s health, other patients are referred back to their local consultants with the provision of a scan review and advice service.

The unit holds a regular symposium open to external professionals.

How the CNS role fits into this service

As Gamma Knife Clinical Nurse Specialist Liz works closely with all the MDTs to provide information and support to the patient and their support network.  In addition CNS clinics are held for pre assessment and patient follow up. A telephone advice service is also available.
